initial exterior addition

Many times projects focus solely on the interior. However, this particular building needed a solution for exterior circulation and a better relationship with the outdoor environment. An exterior addition became the solution. Its integration into the existing built environment and town vernacular became the challenging aspect. This notion of corridor responded directly to circulation needs, but the design evolved into something more, a living space and community retreat space. This structure and space created a social gathering area for inhabitants and visitors as well as communal space on the ground area just off of the sidewalk. This interpretation of an exterior addition instead of just a corridor or balcony allows more functional aspects of the design and integrated the building with the 21st century. It is a breath of fresh air for the town and community in expressing new architecture can still be in keeping with the existing built environment.
