exterior addition

In the top picture one notices the void between the Sharp Building (left) and the Imperial Hotel (right) a building was removed between the two structures exposing the side face of the Sharp Building. Accessible only from the brick steps as seen in the photo and by an elevator in the rear of the Imperial hotel revealed a big problem. An exterior addition was needed to provide another means of egress along with better circulation for the space. An opportunity arose to integrate the existing Sharp Building with its neighboring architecture as well as bring it into the 21st century with a fresh architectural addition and expressed an approach to revitalize the town. Similar characteristics on the front facade tie the two structures together. Louvers allow functional and aesthetic qualities to emerge. Controlling sunlight, letting fresh breezes pass, and providing privacy were the key aspects of this design. Color, form, and detailing revive the integrity of these very individual buildings found on this block.
